She had watched him with the others always alone, isolated from the surrounding world, she had wanted to help me, but his sarcastic comments of woman being weak had always turned her away, Sally was strong enough to stand up against his barrage of insults but she wasn't. She was weak, her fragile mind couldn't take the punishment he so liked to inflict upon the weaker sex; she knew he used it as a shield to protect himself but it still hurt. She was weak she knew it, she was constantly being saved from danger by the Gundam pilots, Heero did it out of a feeling of duty, she was their chance for peace but didn't the world see she wanted to be a normal girl. Now everything would come to late, they hadn't been there to save her like previous times, he ill chosen bodyguards hadn't thought about an attack from behind, someone daring to come behind them and hold the princess as a shield. The stupid bodyguards had shot at the man wounding their princess in the process before the attacker had shot and killed them. He hadn't taken her with him, she was wounded she would hamper his progress but now no one was there to save her she would die alone like she had always feared. Wait, she could hear boots approaching, frantic voices calling, what were they saying was her last thought before she slipped into unconsciousness.
"RELENA, GOD DAMNIT ANSWER ME, RELENA!!!" Screamed Noin to the hall, her eyes falling on the bodies of the dead guards, her eyes searching the hall for any sign of the precious princess. A gasp escaping her lips when she saw the girls lying in a pool of her own blood, her color paling with each passing second, "RELENA," another cry came from her lips as she dashed to the younger girl's side. The ambulance wouldn't get there for precious more minutes; she needed to get the princess out of the building, in case of bombs, or collapse. With a sudden surge of strength supplied to her from her panic she gathered the younger girl in her arms, running to the entrance of the building terror driving her forward. She didn't even see the Gundam pilots until she stumbled into them, tears coursing down her face a large bloodstain appearing on her clothes. The pilots' faces showed concern the gun shot wound not visible because of the way Noin held Relena in her arms. She ignored their questions frantically searching for the ambulance, which could possibly save the young Peacecrafts life.
"MISS NOIN, MISS NOIN!" Quatre shouted worry etched into his face when he saw Noin's frantic face, the growing bloodstain and Relena's lifeless pallor, something was wrong.
"Help me please, " Noin finally replied before she crumpled to the ground Relena still crushed tightly to her.
"Noin let me see, you're going to have to ease up your grip on her Noin," Quatre said quietly his face ashen, the other pilots stood behind their emotions masked except for Duo who was looking on in open shock. The wound was in her shoulder, the blood flowing freely, from what Quatre could tell the bullet was lodged in the bone, lessening the blood loss for the moment.
"Miss Noin, she'll be alright," was his feeble reassurance, if Relena didn't get some sort of medical attention soon then there was no hope. Wufei pushed Quatre out of the way gently he needed to make his own examination of the wound.
"Quatre get my bag, it’s in the compartment on my bike, there's a first aid kit in it, the ambulance isn't coming the hospital was destroyed, we need to remove the bullet and seal the entry wound. I should have some stuff which will substitute for the required instruments, bring it over to the jeep Quatre it'll be easier to do this there," he said calmly, he didn't want someone else to die a senseless death like Meiran not when he could prevent it.
"Wufei," whispered a quiet voice, the voice of the woman he was desperately trying to save, she had struck a chord in his cold heart, her determination to save the world through non-violent means bringing joy to his heart though he knew it would fail this time round at least.
"Shh, Relena, I’ll take care of everything," Wufei whispered quietly to her. Quatre brought the bag over the jeep, his eyes filled with concern and questions, Trowa, Duo and Heero following behind him.
Wufei set to work immediately, his field training in the art of medical aid allowing him to help the fallen Princess. His black eyes filled with determination, he was not going to lose her as well. With the expertise that he had acquired through years of training he managed to dislodge the bullet, his hands becoming stained with Relena's blood, the deep crimsoning adding a splash of color to the dull area in which he worked, the race against time becoming more frantic. He sealed the entry wound with haste his methods not as civilized, as some would have hoped for but the only way to suffice. The young girl in his arms would have screamed at the pain if she had been conscious but luckily she was not, the searing pain of the hot knife cauterizing the wound could not be felt by her.
He held her still body close to him in a protective embrace on the ride to their current safe house, all the time murmuring words of comfort into her ear. An opportunity which he never had with Meiran, but then again he hadn't been much help to Meiran when she had been dying, but now hopefully he had managed to save her life. He stared out the window with sorrowful eyes as he contemplated the gray world which his life would be if he had never met the petulant Princess of the Sank Kingdom, the snobby brat who was the Dorlian's adopted daughter, what he saw was not something he liked. He knew he harbored feelings for her, who wouldn't with her caring heart hidden beneath the layers required of a rich snob. He had always hung in the background with not a hope for himself, resigning himself to just wishing for her happiness as he watched her pine for Heero, the aloof perfect soldier. He didn't know it was him who she pined for, not Heero, he didn't know of the heart to heart, which had been shared many years ago.
Heero watched Wufei from the corner of his eye, observing the tender and yet protective way he held Relena's body close, the anguish in his eyes. Heero hid a smirk at Wufei's predicament, he knew that the Chinese dragon thought that Relena's heart was taken, which was true in a way, but the holder of her heart and love was Wufei and himself. The love she had held for him had only been a silly schoolgirl crush, nothing more. He had sat her down and talked everything out with her at the end of the war, explaining who held his heart and that he hoped the best for her in the future. He had promised to always be her friend, to never leave her to the mercy of the wolves by herself, he had promised to always be a shoulder for her to cry on if the need arose and it often did. Heero alone knew of her love for Wufei the fascination which the solitary Chinese dragon held for the young girl no the young woman who was now being held protectively in Wufei's embrace as she slumbered peacefully.
Relena was transported to her own room as Noin looked on in worry, and Wufei disappearing as soon as he possibly could. Wufei didn't know anyone had seen him leave, but Heero had, of course the perfect soldier had. Heero marched after Wufei in determination, in the time that Relena had become his friend he had come to care about her happiness and he wasn't going to stand by and watch Wufei tear her heart out. He found Wufei in the garden, gazing at the moon, a silent tear resting on his face.
"Wufei," Heero called out not wanting to meet the end of Wufei's sword. He watched as the normally heartless pilot straightened and hastily brushed the tear away as he turned to face Heero, his arrogant mask back in place.
"Heero," Wufei said, daring Heero to speak, hate visible in his black eyes.
"I need to speak with you about Relena," Heero said in his usual monotone voice, slight amusement sparkling in his eyes when Wufei visibly winced and prepared to be decked.
"Yes," Wufei said his yes averted but his stance still proud.
"Why do you ignore her, pretend she doesn't exist," Heero said as Wufei gazed back in surprise this was not what he had expected, no not at all, he had expected to be lying sprawled in the grass by now.
"What do you mean?"
"You ignore her, her pining, why?"
"Why should you care?"
"She's my friend and I want to see her happy, with the man she loves."
"She loves you," Wufei said his heart breaking as the words slipped from his mouth.
"As a friend yes, but not the way she loves you," he said while gazing at the moon, he had gotten better at these talks through his conversations with Relena which would last long into the night.
"What," Wufei managed to stutter through his surprise, the forbidden fruit wasn't forbidden it was their for his taking, all he had to do was ask.
"Go to her Wufei, go to her," Heero said before leaving Wufei to his thoughts, a grin on his usually stoic face. Wufei stood there in the moonlight, his thoughts running through his mind at lightening speed, as he considered all that had been said. He always came to the same thought though, to go to her, the idea had been planted in his mind by Heero. He firmed his resolve, he would go to her that night; he would confess his feelings and then face the piper. He vanished into the night with an eerie grace as he ghosted towards the room in which she had been place, his decision never wavering.
He entered the room to gaze at her sleeping form; she looked almost goddess like with the moon shining on her pale face, illuminating the strands of gold in her hair. She looked like something out of a fairy tale, the untouchable princess but tonight he would look the bull in the eye and face his fear of rejection. He needed her he knew that but did she need him, did she want him.
"Wufei," her soft voice whispered, and he turned to stare directly into her aquamarine eyes, his heart melting at the love he had never dared to look for before his discussion with Heero.
"Relena," he whispered to the night as he glided towards her bed, taking her hand in his own as a rare smile graced his noble features. His black eyes gazed into hers as he committed her every feature to memory, the bed dipped slightly from his weight as he sat down on the edge.
"Thank you," she said as she launched herself in his arms her wound forgotten by the overjoyed princess, the love she had seen in his eyes had called to her soul.
"I love you," he whispered into her hair as he buried his face in her silken abundance of gold, tears of joy falling freely, rolling down his cheeks. Relena gasped in surprise at his confession, her arms wound themselves tighter around his neck as he heart soared.
"You do," she questioned, her voice muffled as she clung to him. He grinned at her, though she couldn't see it, she hadn't rejected him.
"Yes, I love you Relena Peacecraft, I love you with all my heart," Wufei said once more, his voice gaining in volume as he repeated the phrase.
"I love you too, Chang Wufei, I love you too," she said as she was once more dragged back into a blissful sleep, and Wufei continued to hold her to him. Rocking her slightly before he placed her back into the large bed, cradling her in his arms as his lean form lay next to Relena's own. His heart and soul complete the void now filled.
